Su capital es Halifax. El territorio fue otorgado en 1621 por Jacobo I al escocés Sir William Alexander y recibió la denominación de Nova Scotia, Nueva Escocia en latín. Anteriormente el territorio había pertenecido a los franceses bajo la denominación de Acadia.
