Scope note: Engrosamiento y pérdida de elasticidad de las paredes arteriales. La aterosclerosis es la forma más común de arteriosclerosis y consiste en el depósito de lípidos y espesamiento de las células de la túnica íntima (envoltura interna) de las arterias. Otras formas de arteriosclerosis llevan a calcificación de la túnica média de las arterias musculares (esclerosis calcificante de la túnica media de Monkeberg) y engrosamiento de las paredes de pequeñas arterias o arteriolas debido a proliferación celular o depósitos hialinos (arteriolosclerosis)
