Esta proteína se produce a partir del transcrito ARNm alfa del gen p16. El otro producto génico, producido del transcrito beta ayustado alternativamente, es la PROTEÍNA P14ARF SUPRESORA DE TUMORES. Ambos productos génicos tienen funciones supresoras de tumores.
