Scope note: Proteínas asociadas a los microtúbulos, que se expresan preferentemente en las neuronas. Las proteínas tau adoptan diversas isoformas y desempeñan un importante papel en el acoplamiento de monómeros de tubulina en los microtúbulos, asi como en el mantenimiento del citoesqueleto y el transporte axonal. La agregacion de paquetes específicos de proteínas tau en inclusiones filamentosas constituye la característica más común de las lesiones intraneuronales y fibrilares gliales (OVILLOS NEUROFIBRILARES, HILOS DE NEURÓPILO) en numerosos procesos neurodegenerativos (ENFERMEDAD DE ALZHEIMER, TAUOPATÍAS).

Scope note: Microtubule-associated proteins that are mainly expressed in neurons. Tau proteins constitute several isoforms and play an important role in the assembly of tubulin monomers into microtubules and in maintaining the cytoskeleton and axonal transport. Aggregation of specific sets of tau proteins in filamentous inclusions is the common feature of intraneuronal and glial fibrillar lesions (NEUROFIBRILLARY TANGLES; NEUROPIL THREADS) in numerous neurodegenerative disorders (ALZHEIMER DISEASE; TAUOPATHIES).
