Scope note: Proteína relacionada con la autofagia que actúa en la biosíntesis de los AUTOFAGOSOMAS. Se conjuga con la PROTEÍNA ATG12 por un proceso similar a la UBIQUITINACIÓN, que implica a la PROTEÍNA ATG7 y a la enzima ATG10. El conjugado ATG12-ATG5 actúa como una enzima similar a la UBICUITINA LIGASA y se requiere para que las PROTEÍNAS ATG8 se localicen en las membranas de las vesículas de los AUTOFAGOSOMAS y para la modificación de los lípidos de membrana.
