Scope note: Enzima P450 dependiente de NADPH que desempeña un papel esencial en la vía biosintética de los esteroles al catalizar la desmetilación de los 14-metil esteroles tales como el lanosterol. La enzima actúa por medio de la hidroxilación repetida del grupo 14-metilo, lo que da lugar a una conversión por etapas en un alcohol, un aldehído y luego un carboxilato, que es eliminado como ácido fórmico. La esterol 14-desmetilasa es un citocromo P450 inhabitual porque se encuentra en una amplia variedad de organismos, como ANIMALES, PLANTAS, HONGOS y protozoos.
