Scope note: Enzima del citocromo P450 mitocondrial que cataliza la escisión de la cadena lateral del colesterol C27 en pregnenolona C21 en presencia de oxígeno molecular y de NADPH-FERRIHEMOPROTEÍNA REDUCTASA. Esta enzima, codificada por el gen CYP11A1, cataliza la escisión entre C20 y C22, que es el paso inicial y limitante de la biosíntesis de diversas hormonas esteroides gonadales y suprarrenales.
